While you may find your offensive t-shirts to be hysterical, those who walk by you on the street might not share your opinion. If you like them and can use good judgment about when they are completely inappropriate, then by all means you should enjoy the humor. Just remember that those who are reactive to them have a right to be and how you handle things can make a big difference.
People have reactions because they take it personally. The best way to handle their reactions is to avoid having one of your own. Coming back at someone with insensitive or self righteous remarks just does not do any good. You know that you purchased the item in the first place because it would cause a reaction of some sort.
Using good judgment regarding your interaction with those who are offended will help slow down some of the public response. Social media has certainly seen its share of calls for boycotting an establishment selling the clothes. Petitions to be signed fly with fury across international email inboxes. Do not let a moment of conflict encourage the idea of censorship.
There are so many causes today that it can be impossible not to take a side on something. The world is quite diverse and every group wants something done politically to further their cause. Since the causes all have shirts, those who do not support those causes have a right to wear their opinion on their chest and back as well.
Creative marketing also makes these items much more enjoyable. The ideas that the designers come up with are terribly and wonderfully so off color that even those who are offended on some level have to see that there is humor there as well. It is best to avoid certain topics, especially during a political year.
Know who your neighbors are before you sport something truly offensive on your front lawn. You certainly do not need to live for their approval, but in the end you do not want to hang out in the front yard all day making extra sure that everyone sees you.
A public place is there for everyone. You are there in the midst of everyone else. All are welcome as it is a public place. This includes you and your shirt. Really, you never know if someone will think your t-shirt is offensive or if they are more offended by someone who is completely out of line with their behavior. Spitting onto the floor is a good example.
